Our building, designed by architect Jo Noero, is located on the site of the Hout Bay Museum. The building won the Civic and Community award at the World Architecture Festival of 2022.
About the design
The Denis Goldberg House of Hope is located in a beautiful site surrounded by heritage buildings. The building consists of small and large spaces connected by covered walkways which open onto the site on all sides.
The gallery at the centre accommodates the exhibition of Denis Goldberg’s life and his art collection. In the open space in the middle visitors to the exhibitions "rub shoulders" with the children participating in in art, dance, music, circus and other cultural activities.
Jo Noero speaks
When the gallery's sliding doors are opened, the activity area doubles in size. The buildings are painted white with splashes of colour on the entrances and other important elements. The construction and materials are simple. They reflect Denis’s training as an engineer and his straightforward approach to life.
The DGHOH serves as Denis's memorial at the same time that it provides space for others to experience his deep-seated belief that "life is wonderful".
The Denis Goldberg Memorial Garden
A magnificent acacia tree stands at the centre of our memorial garden for Denis. The garden was designed by Denis’s cousin, Joy Sapieka. The family scattered half of Denis’s ashes on the soil around the tree after the official opening of the centre on 9 April 2022. They scattered the other half in the Hout Bay ocean, to join the ashes of Denis’s second wife, Edelgard.
